Sanja Alexandra is 31 years old, and has worked in the fashion industry for past 12 years. Along with her dog Herman, she resides in the Northwest of Copenhagen in a 79 m2 apartment, which she renovated herself during the pandemic and gave it a burst of vibrant colours.

Her friends describe her as a very outgoing and energetic person. She herself says that she is a creative individual, who can sometimes struggle to decide which direction to take creatively.

I can probably best be described as rather flighty – I always have a project going on.

The property Sanja lives in was built in 1908. The apartment itself, measuring 79 m2, was originally a 3-room apartment with a small ‘Copenhagen kitchen’. But during the pandemic, she wanted something new. So, she decided to tear down the wall between the kitchen and bedroom to create her dream kitchen-dining area. Apart from that, the apartment retains its original charm with the old plank floors and near royal stucco on the ceilings.

How would you describe your interior style?

My interior style is very chaotic and colourful. It’s probably a reflection of me as a person. I don’t follow just one direction. I am neither a minimalist nor a maximalist. When it comes to choosing colours, I rely on my gut feeling and heart, rather than following trends – and the same goes for my choice of furniture and objects.

When Sanja decided to paint her apartment, she chose to combine colours that she felt matched the apartment’s original style and charm, as she imagines it might have looked back in the early 1900s when the property was built. However, she chose to use them in a new and modern way, such as painting the ceilings in bold colours.

When painting ceilings, do as Sanja and bring the colour down to the level of the stucco on your pipes, to trick the eye.

I am someone who is incredibly fond of colours, so it was also important for me to paint the apartment in colours that have a positive impact on my mood.

What’s the perfect day for you?

The perfect day for me starts in my east-facing bedroom. This is where I enjoy having my first cup of coffee in the morning light while reading the news and checking Instagram on my phone. After that, I would probably go for a long, lovely walk with Herman and simply enjoy the moment – I’m not one to plan too much, I just go with the flow. That’s probably the best day for me.

What are three things in your apartment that you can’t do without?

That would be Herman – of course. Additionally, my bed; I imagine sleeping on the floor would be quite uncomfortable! And finally, I absolutely adore my new kitchen-dining area, and the warm space that’s been created there.

What’s the next thing you’re going to paint?

I’d really like to avoid painting for a while, but I already know that the next thing I’m going to paint will be my wardrobe. I am incredibly fond of all shades of blue, and I think Blue Note is an incredibly beautiful colour that would suit my wardrobe well.
